Stand-Up 2008 Review

25th

November 2008

It’s the end of the year which means a load of Stand-Up DVD’s come out just in time for Christmas. It’s like they planned it or something. Anyway with the large amount coming this year I’m going to spilt them into two articles although that’s mainly because I haven’t watched them all yet and a few are yet to be released.

I’ll probably post reviews of Sean Lock, Lee Evans, Frank Skinner and a few others at a later date. I won’t be posting a review of Bill Bailey – Tinselworm due to me going to see him later in the year so obviously I don’t want to spoil the DVD. Enjoy

Jimmy Carr – In Concert

Jimmy Carr’s 4th DVD aptly named In Concert is pretty standard as far as Jimmy Carr DVD’s go. Surprisingly most of this is original stuff but unsurprisingly it isn’t as funny as previous outings. You can only imagine that it’s hard to come up with new material every year and it really shows. It’s still worth a watch if you don’t mind Jimmy Carr’s brand of offensive comedy. Just about worth it for the skit were he throws out random thoughts to the ambiance of a live jazz band because it’s clever and easily the funniest part of the DVD.

Frankie Boyle – Live

Frankie Boyle otherwise known as the Scottish one on Mock The Week seems to be one of the fastest rising comedians on the UK scene. His highly anticipated first DVD is for all intents and purposes great but you feel left that he recycled a bit too much from Mock The Week. While watching you’ll often know the punchline to many of the jokes and it feels like you’ve seen it before. Not disappointing in the least but if your an avid fan of Mock The Week you might find too many recycled jokes for your liking.

Michael McIntyre – Live & Laughing

Michael McIntyre was fairly unknown to me at the beginning of the year yet his DVD is easily one of the best to come out this year. It takes a while to get going but has many brilliant moments. He might appear to be one of those annoying posh / camp comedians but he’s nothing but annoying. Worth a buy and definitely worth picking up.

Russell Howard – Live

Russell Howard is one of the stand out acts from the romp of comedians to be showcased on Mock The Week and similar panel shows. His DVD doesn’t disappoint and although he seems a bit too excitable (which results in you missing a few of the jokes sometimes) and way too fast, it’s definitely worth a watch. There are enough genuine moments throughout that showcase Russell’s unique personality and brand of almost childish comedy.

Dara O’Briain – Talks Funny Live From London

Dara O’Briain Talks Funny easily wins the best named DVD of the year but isn’t the funniest. Dara seems to be at his best while in hosting with other people to work with and his DVD seems a bit stale and offers up all too many simply un-funny jokes. Saying this when one does hit home, it really does and it goes to prove that the current crop of comedians all have their moments. Whether this show offers enough of them to make it worth the price of entry really relies on how much you like Dara O’Briain.

Post Office

November 2008

Well as a few people who follow this blog might know I’ve moved down to Falmouth for Graphic Design. It explains the mad amount of work being posted and what this post is about.

I find myself posting stuff more often. Most probably the crazy amount of games that are to be reviewed so I have to post them away to other reviewers. Now that’s fine but the closest Post Office down on Bar Terrace has already closed down after me going to it once. The other one is Killigrew Street Post Office.

It’s pretty much just a Post Office but with normal people inside. Most PO workers seem to look really angry about the fact your sending mail but this one is actually all right. They know what they are doing, it’s close enough to where I am and the people are nice. So it confuses me why they are closing it down to just have one big Post Office in the middle of town. All this is going to cause are longer queues and a longer walk.

I don’t mind the walk bit so much but it seems dumb to close down a Post Office that appears to be working fine. There are always customers inside so it can’t be a lack of business. I asked them today about what’s going to happen but it appears it’s going to get shut down whatever which seems a bit stupid.

Oh well

Some new work for you here. We were given a few keywords to pick from and then we had to relate that to Orange. I picked ‘Your Group’ and went with the idea of communities. Even if you know someone who’s poor, posh, living in flats or caravan then you can get in contact with them through Orange.

I am caravan by the way, just thought I should point out that one was a mistake on purpose please.

This will be the last work up for a while in what is probably going to be a lazy month in terms of Blogizzling. That and the mad amount of games coming out that have to be reviewed for The Nid.

Money Holding Device

November 2008

After someone spilt a drink it ruined my old wallet. We could have saved it but the cup did a complete flip and landed upright so we were too distracted by that to care about cleaning it up. It was water anyway. The Point is my old paper covered in duct tape wallet got ruined and I had to make a new one.

I found a card holder while tidying up and took the horrible Natwest plastic thing it was covered in and made my own. Decided to use the front of our uni diary as I’m not using it. A bit of glue and extra slot for notes later and you have one complete wallet.

Might have to make some kind of elastic band to hold it down.

Subwoofer Towers

November 2008

Here is a “final” version of my Postcard for a graffiti project. I was thinking of making something that would belong in a place but make it out of paper. For example a light on a ceeling. I eventually decided to reverse it by turning a small object into a large scale thing. I came up with ‘Subwoofer Towers’.

This is a series of printed out windows, doors, billposters and more stuck onto the side of my sub. After a quick night of photoshopping I came up with this.

The idea was great but I would have liked more time to put into it. Not too keen on the final result. Still it’s done and it was quite fun making it.
